The first thing that you need to know about Rudra is that he is the destroyer, or the destroyer of all. He is the antagonist of Brahma. He is the personification of the god of destruction. Rudra takes away all the characteristics that make us human. He turns us into rocks. So, if we are the defender of humanity, what is Rudra? He is a destroyer. We are meant to be the defender of everything. The Chandogya Upanishad explains it this way:
